Platter mat of choice around here is the Herbie's Audio Lab Way Excellent II that comes in a variety of thicknesses, diameters and spindle size. Stock is limited at the moment, so if you don't see what you want, contact Robert. What I like about these is that the material couples the LP to the platter. The benefit of this is two-fold. First, the disc will spin at the same speed as your platter. You want this. If your mat isn't "holding" the disc in place, you could be losing grip on a micro level, which will impact sound. Second, this is like memory foam that conforms to the record surface. Why is this important? Records are not perfectly flat, and the label area needs support to keep the disc flat ... and if you put a record clamp over the label, you need to make sure your mat doesn't cause the outer edges of the record to lift up a little.

I have used felt, cork, and cork/rubber for years, and every time I change, I hear some kind of difference. But there are some mats that sound "better" at first, simply because the sound is "different". The question is do you still like the sound a week later. Let's be honest in that we all hear a little different. And if you have tinitus, that impacts what you hear to some degree.

This is my opinion, based on my experience, and my ears. Your mileage may vary. Is this the best mat you can buy? Maybe not, depending on your set of variables. I just wanted to throw this out in the IG universe. And no, I don't make money off "promoting" other companies and products. I do this because I like audio.

Sometimes it is necessary to modify ground plug connectors. In the case of this AR XA “Hot Rod” build, we are using a Cardas Audio ground post that needs a 0.25” fork spade. I took some ring connectors, and removed what I needed to create forks, then sanded and polished down. As you can see, the connector is flush with the plug base. This post is really just a shout out to one of my new favorite wood finishing product companies @walrusoil … this Granadillo custom plinth for a customer AR XA turntable is turning out even more beautifully than I had expected, in part to the beautiful wood from @woodworkerssource … and walrus oil products. I used Furniture Finish to seal the wood, followed by Furniture Wax finish and polish.

It’s interesting how priorities change when health issues arise that could have drastic consequences like death or paralysis. Our corgi-mix rescue dog Shasta had emergency surgery two days ago. She had a herniated/bulging disc at T13 and L1. Surgery went as good as they can ever expect and prayers have been answered at critical points. Now, it is up to her to respond, and regain movement of her hind legs. We have to use a sling to help her pee … and she requires a bit of work through the day. And now, I’m balancing her needs with work I need to do for this business and my graphic design business. This started off as an experiment. These Avid 102a

This started off as an experiment. These Avid 102a's are under the radar to say the least. But when I saw a pair locally for $40, I figured I couldn't lose no matter what. To my surprise, these 42 year old speakers sounded pretty good. They just didn't look that good. There was some cabinet damage. Not major. But enough to dictate new veneer. I will tell you that the plastic veneer on these took about 2 hours to remove with a really good heat gun. It was stinky and required some serious pulling of vinyl to pry it away and off.

My goal was simple. I wanted to see if I could restomod these using the existing drivers, a new Dayton film cap to the crossovers, Dayton binding posts and PE veneer ... and not be upside down in them. At the end of the day, I run a business and will sell these. So it would be nice to at least break even, given this was an experiment.

Where this gets interesting, to me at least, is that I learned a few things. First, don't use cheap veneer. This stuff came from Parts Express and while it could have just been the box I got, I had some issues with it. I found from online reviews I wasn't the only one. Again, my goal dictated that I make these affordable for someone to enjoy one-of-a-kind stylish vintage 2-way speakers.

The star of the show is the Calico Maple front baffles. I found a piece locally that was just big enough for me to resaw it and bookmatch it to a 3/8" thickness. This was drymounted (like veneer) to the front of the cabinets. The tricky part is the Maple veneer sides had to be painted BEFORE gluing the front baffles ... so when I do this again, it will be on cabinets I build from scratch with a mounting scheme where I can fasten the front baffle from the back of the cabinet. There is a reason Harbeth/Spendor does this. Now I know.

The Calico Maple baffles are sealed with hand mixed amber shellac (flakes), then the whole speakers were shot with about 5 coats of lacquer. The cabinets are not perfect, but look better than most vintage speakers you will find. There is no pretense that these are showroom head turners. But they are a joy to look at, and I hope I find someone in the PNW that will enjoy them as well.
